How do you create a social network that encourages people to learn and share about a cutting edge technology? Coinstarter is a social network that offers users the ability to share content, track how different cryptocurrencies are performing and create and fund campaigns that are cryptocurrency related. I was tasked with helping them better define their brand, designing their entire platform, and creating the entire user experience for the site.
Coinstarter needed to be simple to use and engaging across every device, but especially on mobile so that as much of the code could be reused later to cut down the effort and time to make an app. When we started working on the project only a desktop beta version of the site existed, so we had to totally rethink every piece of content, learning from the current beta site to make the mobile experience as friendly as possible.
Coinstarter wanted to set themselves apart from other social networks, by using everything from color choice to a bolder more geometric font treatment. Their goal was to stand out in a crowd, while appearing as trustworthy and familiar to its users.
The campaign creation flow was incredibly important to the experience. Coinstarter allows users the ability to post campaigns using their own cryptocurrency, STAC. The campaigns require a lot of information and are vetted by Coinstarter employees before being posted to the site to ensure their validity. We worked to create a tool that allowed users to easily and logically move through the process, save their information so they could come back to it later, and to easily preview their campaign pages.
The feed is the core of the platform. It allows users to understand what is going on in the community, follow experts, make friends and keep up to date with everything that is going on in the crypto community. On mobile, users can easily comment, read entire threads and add their own posts.
